If you live anywhere near the coast in Orange County, you have probably cleaned a window, stepped back, and still seen a cloudy haze or a pattern of spots. It is frustrating, and it is not because you did a bad job. It is because what is on the glass is not dirt.
Hard water spotting is a mineral deposit. When water containing dissolved calcium and magnesium sits on glass and evaporates, the water leaves and the minerals stay behind, bonded to the surface. Regular glass cleaner is designed to dissolve oils and grime, not mineral scale, so it wipes right over the top of it.
Coastal properties get hit from three directions at once. Salt air deposits leave a fine film that attracts and holds moisture. Marine layer condensation forms and evaporates on the glass overnight, every night. And sprinkler overspray is the worst offender of all, because irrigation water is untreated and hits the same panes on the same schedule day after day.
Removing it requires a mineral-specific treatment, applied and dwelled correctly, then neutralized so the glass is not left etched or streaky. That is a different process from washing, and it is why a normal wipe-down never seems to hold.
One important caveat: if spotting has been left on glass for years, especially on panes that get direct afternoon sun, the minerals can etch into the surface itself. At that point the damage is physical, not a deposit, and no cleaning removes it. We always tell customers honestly when we think that is what we are looking at rather than promising a result we cannot deliver.
The best defense is prevention. Adjust sprinkler heads so they are not hitting glass, and put exterior windows on a recurring schedule so deposits never get the months of dwell time they need to bond hard.
